Luncheon Concerts on the Square

Every Thursday during the months of May and September, the Arts Association sponsors a free luncheon concert on the Square in Covington. Performers range from jazz ensembles to bluegrass bands. The lawn is always filled with mothers and their toddlers, seniors from personal care homes, and school groups including pre-k, special needs children and businesspeople.

Newton County Community Band

Formed in 1993 under the direction of beloved community musician and retired educator/band director, T.K. Adams, the Newton County Community Band is composed of volunteer musicians of all ages who enjoy weekly rehearsals and present free community performances that include Christmas and spring concerts, a side by side concert with 8th graders of the Newton County School System, a July 4th concert on Covington’s historic square, and an annual concert at Oxford College’s “Oxford Day”. Dust off your old high school or college instrument and join in the fun!

To join the Community Band, please contact Mr. T.K. Adams at (770) 786-4816.

Washington Street Community Center

The Arts Association in Newton County partners with the Washington Street Community Center to provide concerts, lessons, enrichment programs, instruments and art supplies to children and young people who might not otherwise have exposure to the arts.  Spotlight on Drama is an example of a program being taught at Washington Street.  This group is the brainchild of two Oxford Youth Singers, Mary Lathem and Kellen Finney.  Mary Allison and Kellen volunteer their personal time to teach afterschool participants in the art of drama twice a month.

Residencies
In partnership with the Newton County Schools, the Arts Association presents 5 in-school residencies for over 10,000 students each year, using artists on the annual arts series. Teachers are provided lesson plans from the Arts Association based on the type of performance their students will attend; thus, the students possess background knowledge of the performance before they begin. Often for the younger grades, links are made between reading and the music or dance of the performance.

Scholarships
The Arts Association provides scholarships to all of those in need in order to reach the under-served population within the community. Scholarships for all Young Artists Programs are most often identified though the public school music and art teachers.
